Becoming an independent traveler

Getting here

An important part of your journey to becoming an independent employee will be travelling to work, which is why we’ll support you with your travel plans from day one. You’ll need to quickly become an independent traveler, firstly to get you to NSI, but then to your work experience placements and internships.

We’re based at The Warren in Hull city centre, just opposite Queens Gardens and the BBC building, overlooking the beautiful rose bowl fountains. This is the perfect location and only a few minutes walk from the bus and train station, so you can find lots of regular transport from wherever you live.

Before you join and during your first two weeks transition period, we’ll work with you and your parents/carers to plan your route to town and make sure you’re confident to travel alone.

Independent travel is an important part of preparing you for the world of work, as most employers will expect you to find your own way to work and to arrive on time, so time keeping and punctuality will also be key.

“At first, I was unsure about travelling on my own. With help and planning from staff at the start I am now confident about catching buses to different places. On my internship I enjoy my daily tasks and the people I work with.”
